Bara No Sôretsu
by Jamie E17

Toshio Matsumoto's debut Bara No Sôretsu (Funeral Parade of Roses, also known as Funeral Procession of Roses) from 1969 is a secret gem worth getting your hands on.

It has recently been released by Eureka Video for the first time outside of Japan. The story evolves around cross-dressing club kid Eddie, which is a reason for buying it on his own. Too beautiful too touch, too tempting not to - Eddies story soon leads us in to a dangerous plot in the Tokyo underworld. It contains a lot of gore, pop art visuals, gay sex, drugs and it's surprising the film doesn't have a larger reputation. The whole film is a bizarre trip in beauty and was a great inspiration for Kubrick's Clockwork Orange.

Bara No Sôretsu comes with a 40-page book, including an essay and stills.
