WHEN HUMANS WALKED THE EARTH
by Jamie E17

The Chapman Brothers latest instillation currently on show at Tate Britain, is a series of 10 'impossible' machines that emulate biological and psychological states such as breathing, thinking or sexual intercourse, inspired by their 1993 work 'Little Death Machine'.

They consist of tools, clamps, nails, milk bottles, eyeballs, brains and penises cast in bronze to create mechanical-like sculptures or artifacts loaded with sexual references. They question mechanistic theories of the human mind - notably those of Sigmund Freud and reference to Dada and Surrealism's ability to transform everyday objects into something that challenges conventional perception.
