don't miss the little things
by Antonia Leslie

The details of Alexander McQueen's work are well worth a mention. Embroidery, patchwork, pierced and moulded leather, printed knittwear and all this fused with a great knowledge of film, ancient cultures and sewing tecniques. He knows his craft. Also a very particular choice of fabrics, some with tiny song birds. Other fabrics were finely pleated to resemble victorian fans rather than clothing. Strange combinations such as ancient Japan and bondage or ancient Japan and bikers, and in the middle of all this, "Picnic at Hanging Rock". The shoes were full of slightly child like touches, round toed with a smocked cotton "sock" and then a weapon like heel. It is not often that fashion is so exciting close up
