The Serpentine’s spinning
by Katy & Philip

The Serpentine’s temporary summer pavilion designed by Zaha Hadid, is now being dismantled to be replaced by the delayed spinning top structure by artist Olafur Eliasso and architect Kjetil Thorson.

We think it looked like three big mushrooms, but apparently its was designed to ‘allowing air, light and sound to travel through narrow gaps in a state that is both open and likewise tending toward closure’.

The summer pavilion is always worth a visit. However, disappointingly, this year’ will contain a lecture theatre rather than the usual tea shop. Plenty of room in Hyde Park for a picnic, but this year you need to bring your own cake to avoid disappointment.
