August 10, 2007 The Morrissey Smiths Disco by Buster Bennett Once a month, The Star & Garter, Fairfield Street, Manchester hosts a tribute night to The Smiths & Morrissey. You won’t see any neon here and you won’t be hearing anything other than Morrissey’s voice all night long. The dancehall was crammed, dark and sweaty. Rectangular in shape with an army of Smith fans all gazing with a melancholy haze towards the alter like DJ booth, above which hangs a six foot portrait of a youthful Morrissey staring longingly towards the stars. In fact this portrait is the only thing visible in the entire room, lit up with a god like aura. I lasted five songs, one for each pound I handed over on the door, after which I felt I had to leave before I became one with the ebb and flow of the crowd. It's worth it for the experience but don't stay too long! The Star & Garter
