checks and stripes
by Antonia Leslie

I am not so sure that the Bloomsbury set would have been the theme to this show, but somehow that is what crossed my mind whilst watching. Vanesa Bell's painted furniture and pottery, I could even see her in the clothes. There were tea gowns with rough wool jackets or knitted separate sleaves and low waisted flapper dresses with printed stockings (maybe they were held up with garters?). Nearlly all the looks were printed in some way with faded stripes and checkes, so that rather than being graphic, they were dream like and gentle on the eye. The colours, were those of a windy day in Autumn, stormy blue, rainy grey with the occasional pale rust. All in all it was a very painterly show.
