what we need is great big melting pot
by Antonia Leslie

Jean Paul Gaultier took us on a trip to everywhere. Russian steppes to the crowds of Mexico and all the way back to arid Afganistan. Knife pleats with Gypsy roses, coins jangling on ankles and silk Chinese pantaloons that became jogging pants. It was never first degree. Folk mixed with everyday. All the crafts, embroideries, weaves, colours used to enhance wool tailoring. Hoodies became jellaba embroidered hoods worn with clinched waist leather pilot jackets. Bright yellow ballroom dance petticoat with velvet mix country skirt and simple black jacket. The final look was a knitted body suit and jewelry straight from the forbidden city worn with fuschia tights, the emperor's concubine goes to the Moulin Rouge. I started humming "What we need is a great big melting pot" by Blue Mink. Great
