pony tails and gloves
by Antonia Leslie

The catwalk was circular as the fountain in the Cour Carree du Louvre was the centerpiece of the "tent" and the models walked round it as the water sparkled behind them. What an elegant setting and perfect for the very American version of the "New Look". The sweater girls come to Paris to visit the king. Pony tails bobbed along with nipped waists, perky cleavages and gloves. Oh sorry they were dressed too. Tweed skirt suits with very fitted jackets often with a handbag. Lots of knitwear, short cardigans and lace knit dresses all served up with very full skirts and ball dresses. There was even a Guernsey jumper. The colours were very subdued and gave a quiet touch to the rich selection of fabrics, with brocades, tweeds and even rubber all making an appearance. An American in Paris.
