The Cockettes
by Aki Choklat

The Cockettes (Bill Weber & David Weissman, 2004) is an amazing documentary about a radical hippy freak group from the 60’s. It grew from the communist psychedelic scene in San Francisco, and the commune soon developed into a performance group. This scene gave birth to the careers of icons such as Divine and Sylvester, and paved the way for Bowie’s Ziggy Stardust and the Glam Rock. All the looks were created form thrift store finds. The fans included Janis Joplin, Diane Vreeland and John Lennon. The glitter, shaved eye-brows and make-up that was de rigeur rocked San Francisco and NY. Sound familiar? Judge for yourself…
