stuck in rutland
by Antonia Leslie
If you ever find yourself stuck in Rutland please go and visit this dark green fantasy. A man with the very noble name of Amos Alexander let his imagination soar. He did not stop imagining until he had made 150 highly idiosyncratic topiary hedges, at the same time as being head forester of the Clipsham Estate.
They line a long avenue with his house, the gate lodge at one end. What a view! Rather like Stonehendge, the suns streams through the gaps between the hedges and lands on the grassy avenue in stripes.I have not seen this place in Autumn but I can imagine that a misty morning with dew on the ground must be just perfect.
