stuffed sorry stuck in the 7th
by Antonia Leslie

People stuck in Paris on a rainy day could take shelter with the animals at Deyrolle. People may have been doing that since 1831. On the rue du Bac between the Seine and St German, Deyrolle is worth the visit just for the building. Downstairs is devoted to a gardening come homeware shop. Go on up the creaking wooden stairs and there he is, a polar bear on the move yet still. The purpose built glass curiosity cabinets house all kinds of wonders of the animal world. Then there are all the individual insect drawers to pull out with colours that put Biba eyemakeup to shame. And to think a terrible fire burnt all to the ground and everything has been been rebuilt including the animals, well re-stuffed. They have the best museum shop with a selection of old posters, and yes you can buy the bear.
