FRUITCAKE!
by Rob Diament

A few months ago at the Tate Modern's Kahlo exhibition, I overheard a lady say, "I love that picture so much I could eat it!".

Well now, eager (and hungry) fans of another artist, Sarah Lucas, will be thrilled to discover they can do just that. In 2001, Lucas put 12 of her photos onto real rum fruitcakes. Produced by a wedding cake specialist in Essex, each photo was inkjetted onto icing in edible inks.

Lucas said, 'It's not often you can eat a sculpture. People ask how long the cakes will last, and they will probably last longer than the lifetime of the person who buys them, which is an odd idea to have to accept - to be outlived by a cake.'

These cakes are currently being sold, signed and numbered by the artist.
