October 26, 2005 The House of Homosexual Culture by Luke Howard The inaugural gathering of the HHC, a discussion group specialising in appreciating gay culture, promised to be interesting. Led by author Alan Jones, the theme of the evening was Does Disco Suck? Although Jones had many good anecdotes, like the first time he heard Love’s Theme by Love Unlimited Orchestra at an LA disco whilst Divine graced the dance floor, the event lacked passion. The socio-political context of disco’s popularity amongst gay men was ignored and barely a mention was given to first out disco superstar Sylvester or disco’s contemporary legacy. As an avid disco fan I was disappointed, Jones appeared uncertain of his audience’s interest in the subject, which seemed obvious with the capacity attendance. The HHC promises to inform and inspire, here’s hoping next time it does. homoculture.org
