by Tatu Vuolteenaho

T: How would you describe the music you play? What kind of music are you planning to play at ET on 23.06 2007 in London?

A: Its house but its very hard to pinpoint in just one direction. I take bits from deep, tech, minimal, prog and tribal and try to fuse them all together in this weird mixture. I guess thats pretty much what I'm thinking to do at ET that night.

T: You lived in London for a year and worked at Kokoon To-Zai. When was that? Has that experience and the London scene generally affected your musical career and how?

A: Kokon To-Zai was in 2000. London has always played a key element in my musical career. First time I visited London was around 91-92, and ever since I've always had a great admiration for the clubs, fashion and music thats coming out from there. Kokon To-Zai naturally had loads to do musicwise. Richard (the King) and I had pretty much open hands in buying the music to the shop, so it was very educational.

T: How does the visual style of the crowd affect on your playing or does it?

A: I think people in general aren't paying that much attention to style. the people who do, are doing it to the fucking fullest. I love that. I think helsinki is one of the styliest cities around atm. (www.hel-looks.com)

T: How did you end up playing the style you play? Influences?

A: My first influence was Trade @ Turnmills. I loved that club to death. the whole idea of different rooms with different sounds and the music that gradually built and built, was something I've never experienced before. It's something I still try to fuse to my sets, start things slowly and build it up to max.

T: How do you prepare for gigs?

A: Get a goodnight sleep, have a good meal, burn shitloads of cd's and do some edits, the usual.

T: You have played often in Estonia and other places that used to be part of the former Soviet Union? Have you noticed any differences in their musical tastes compared to those places that have been open to western dance and pop for years?

A: Places like Poland, Lithuania & Latvia have amazing crowds. the clubscene might be relatively new but the people are super educated with music. they've had the biggest dj's to perform and to educate them. It gets really really fuckin wild up there.

T: What is the Finnish dance music scene like? Do you have any advice to those who plan to visit Finland and the parties there?

A: Finnish scene is quite small, but its very intimate. Everybody knows everybody, so thats why there's hardly any bullshit. I think there's definately something for everyone here. come with an open mind, leave your inhibitions behind and you'll have a brilliant time.

T: You were voted once the number one DJ in Finland and have stayed in the top house DJ league in Finland for a long time. Does this kind of status over there help you to get gigs abroad or is it mostly by personal contacts or demo mixes?

A: I think it's a Finland only thing. Most of the gigs I do abroad are coming from either my personal contacts I've built up over the years or through my management @ www.misc.fi.

T: Please tell us about your most amazing DJing experience(s), where, when etc?

A: I honestly hope that it's still coming. One of the best was a couple of years back in Lithuania, at this club called Exit. I played for an 3hr set, in a club where Deep Dish had just played a night before, packed up dancefloor, the best soundsystem I've ever heard..everything just clicked that night.

T: Do you have any artists and labels that you play a lot? If so, which ones?

A: Too many to mention... Audiofly, Guy Gerber, Ame, Jimpster, Milton Jackson, Aril Brikha, Psycatron, Alex Neri, Nick K., Maskio, Joe T Vanelli, Dyno, Dusty Kid, Alex Dolby to name a few.

T: You have a cute little pug. What does he think about the music you play? Does he dance or bark or..?

A: Moses the Pug roxx! He does howl at times when he hears something in a track I probably don't get. Sometimes he gets restless if a track doesn't please him. Pugs are amazing dogs.

T: What is in the pipeline for your Danceteria label?

A: Next up is a 4 track EP called "DANCETERIA SUMMER SAMPLER" , 4 different tracks. DANCETERIA: PASSION, MIIKA KUISMA & MR.A: SMOKY ROOM(KOMYTEA REMIX), DUB STATE: SNOW CAT, WOW & HEIKKI L: MUSIC. our aim is to take over the world and make people dance, naturally.

T: Have you thought about keeping Danceteria label to Finnish artists only or could there be remixers for example from other countries?

A: Yes, we're thinking of signing some remixes outside of finland pretty soon.

T: Tell us about the Danceteria club night?

A: http://www.danceteriamusic.com/cms/?page_id=8

T: Your views on Nu-Rave?

A: Things do come & go in 10 year circles...first it was electro, now its rave. It's allright I guess. I'm just curious whats up next?

T: Plans for the future? What would you like to do more in your musical career?

A: Get more into producing and remixing. We just did a version of a classic housetrack, "Gat Decor: Passion", which I'm really happy about. Which also is rare since I'm myselves worst enemy, I'm overcritical and never satisfied. To DJ all over and just enjoy the ride!
