We were invited to the Beaux Arts on the Seine, which always gives a polite calm entrance to any show. Oh dear, I was a bit late, but low and behold I had the best view to take pictures. Hussein's show started with sombre but rich colours, like chocolate on top of cappuccinos, or very wet slate in Wales and even the darkest bottom of a wine bottle. Otherwise normally delicate features became weighted, such as ruffles in felt, or evening sequins replaced with fake nails in rows and organza that was cut in such a way as to look like glass panels. The fake fur reminded one of Shar Pei dogs (which in themselves float between ugly and the must have) but had the stature of sculpture. This show was the most close to difficult visually and yet missed it with such aplomb that it made us all think. Thank you Mr Chalayan for exploring the hidden side of beauty.
