The pleats theatre was back and gave the same amount of excitement to the audience as the old days of Miyake when you lost yourself in his view of the fashion world. The whole performance kicked off with a Chinese shadow play that made guitarist Ei Wada and vocalist Chiyako Maeda become part of the set design. The silhouette of the guitarist playing with what look liked half an old mill wheel, all black on white, took me back to silent movies. A group of girls came out in a very serious way and stopped in order to artistically open half circular huge clutch bags and dress themselves with the pleated item within. Rehearsals for this must have taken some time because it went without hitch. The handbags, colours and the extraordinary shapes of the looks reminded me of Jean-Paul Goude's photographs and I could almost see Grace Jones wearing them. Then there were lots of bouncing pleats that followed, a construced fabric that looked liked crazy paving and then utterly delicious pleats that almost became liquid. Thank you Mr Miyamae for the invitation to your opening night.
