By Tatu Vuolteenaho

You started DJing in Copengahen in 1998. What kind of music did you play back then, examples of tracks?

Well back then i was playing House music only! It was the style that i got interested in to begin with and to some extent i still find the most interesting.. I'd rather list a couple of labels that really made me tick: Stickman Records, Distance, Guidance Recordings & NRK sound division.

Has your music style changed over the years? Can you describe your current style?

My music taste as a dj and as a listener has changed much over the years but have funnily enough ended up pretty much right back where i began. Now i guess i would classify it as House, Minimal, Tech-house and some disco influences but this is only describing my taste as a dj.

Could you tell about your first gigs in London?

My first gigs in London were around the brick lane area in London in 2002. The vibe was still the house style witch i loved for years before i moved here. I then took a 3 year break from dj and focused on my productions. I started up again with my new live set witch i played basically all over the east London trashy venues.. Was a great time!

When and how did you get into music production?

I got into making music quite early through a mate of mine. We were about 15 and was mainly trying out stuff like trip hop and ambient. When i was about 17 i heard House music for the first time, it totally took me by storm and i never really looked back since.

I remember you from the time you were doing music and live gigs with Cormac as Cavalier. Now you two are residents at Wet YourSelf at Fabric with Jacob Husley. Is Cavalier still going?

Cavalier is on a hold as it stands but you never know.. :) Think we both have moved into other styles and maybe are not musically on the same vibe so much any more as we were. We are still working close together almost every day though and are planning remixes together for the future but as two solo artist.

You have played at Ibiza, Barcelona, Tokyo etc. Can you tell about differences in dance cultures in various locations if you have noticed some?

Well - this is a hard one.. I think every country, even every city has much it's own vibe and crowds.. Think properly Tokyo stood out the most since the culture is so different anyway - basically felt like playing at some future space rave! AMAZING!

You got dj recidency in one of the best club nights in one of the best venues in London. Obviously you have to be good and work hard, but is there some other aspects that help łgetting there˛? Have you been very selective on where, what and when to play for example?

I think when it comes to achieving something it's basically just working hard to get where you want to be.. Only thing i can think of witch makes you stand out is experience..

The club night Wet YourSelf has a good quality on the visual side of the production too. Are you involved in any of that aspect? How did you find the people who do the flyers and visuals?

Well first thing we did was top approach my good friend Martin Wollerstam who creates the illustrations witch i think our brand is very associated with and i came up with the very simple black on white flyer design.

WYS has three resident DJ/promoters, how do you share the tasks of promoting jobs? Are there specifical areas for each or everyone does a bit of everything or?

We pretty much work on most things together but there is ofcause different things we as individuals are naturally are better at so tasks is delegated out to get as much done as possible.

Your weekly night Wet YourSelf has had plenty of top dj guest and dance music stars. Any interesting stories about any of these? What is Miss Kittin like in real life for example?

Haha.. Well some has become really good friends and are really interesting people - thats all you'll get out of me..

Your new EP called 'Play It By Heart' is now out on Wet YourSelf records. Did you first have the name of the track in mind and then created the music or how did the creation and naming process happen?

For the first time in music making i actually had the name in mind before creating the track but this is not how i usually do it.

What technology you use when making music?

Anything really - From the most up to date pro software to old school hardware and i love to do lot's of recordings live from percussion to singing.. Think you have to just try out stuff in the studio and have some fun.

Vinyl, CD, laptop. What are your views on these ways of DJing? What do you use?

Used vinul for the first 3/4 years then i started playing live only with a laptop and some controllers. Now im using cd's as they are more reliably and easier to travel with. I can play on all medias so for me selection means the most.

Imagine a dream scenario for the best ever party. What would it include? Ever been close to that in real life?

A great party dosnt take much as long as you have these 3 ingredients:
1: Great sound
2: Great people
3: Great venue

Have you been to Finland before? What kind of thoughts do you have about your up and coming gig at BITCH @ Playground in Helsinki?

Never been to Finland before so im well excited to see the most nordic country in scandinavia.. Im very much associate myself as a scandi so it will be great to see. Regarding "BITCH" im really looking forward to see what the Finish vibe is on the floor.. and why it's called BITCH?!?

Do you have any artists and labels that you play a lot? If so, which ones?

Artists:
Stimming, H.O.S.H., Lee Jones, Frivolous, Ryan Crossen, Guti ect ect ect..

Labels:
Diynamic, Cityfox, Bar25, Cadenza, Bpitch, Cocoon, Crosstown Rebels, Get Physical, Kindisch, Lowmidhigh, Mobilee and much much more

Any future plans you would like to tell us?

Doing a collaboration project with a very good friend of mine witch is going to be a minimal house/jazz/techno/experimental sort of dance act - We have our first two releases coming out in feb / march 2011 so looking forward to get working on making the into a full on live act and hopefully travel the world with :)
